How to lose 30-40 pounds fast?

Well i’m a bit overweight and i want to lose weight…quick. I have started to make small changes like giving up soft drinks and drinking only water, and i’m in band at school and we do physical conditioning every tuesday and thursday.
I’m kinda at a loss as to what to eat though and what kind of exercises to do. I have the desire to lose weight i just lack in will power. I don’t want to be pencil thin i just want to be healthy and not overweight. So what can i eat to help me lose weight quick (and i need a heavier lunch on tuesday and thursdays so i don’t run out of energy at practice)
If i followed a plot how long do you reckon it would take to lose 40 pounds?
