Hello, I would like to know how long it would take to lose 30 pounds healthily?

I’m 19, Male, 5"10, 200 pounds

Those figures sounds terrible in terms of height/weight ratio but it isn’t as terrible as it looks. I’m quite heavily muscled. Very stocky, huge arms, wide chest, huge shoulders and very muscled legs.

A year ago I was 170 pounds with a six pack and due to over indulgence I place masses of weight on and got stout.

My question is I’m now dedicated to losing that weight and I’m shortly going to join a gym and I would like some pointers in how to lose this weight?
What foods should I eat and how often?
How many hours per day/week should I spend in the gym?
What are best things at the gym to use?
What is a realistic target in acheiving this weight loss? I was hoping by christmas but if thats overly optimistic could I have a more accurate time?

Thanks.. any help will be appreciated!!

  1. Greywolf says:

Exercise will increase your metabolic rate and burn additional calories, but multiple studies have found that the only thing that matters is the number of calories you burn compared to how many you consume (eat).

The simple answer to healthy weight loss is 2lbs per week, so 15 weeks.

Muscle weighs more than stout, so lifting in a way that increases muscle mass will cause you to gain weight, even though it’s healthy weight.

Low weight, high reps and cardio is the simple answer to your what to do at the gym question. Any cardio you delight in – treadmill, bike, whatever, mix it up throughout the week.

In terms of food, you can probably lose the 30 pounds just by not drinking calories – that means drinking water pretty much all the time.

It sounds rough and dull, but it’s not once you get used to it. Even diet sodas have been shown to increase your desire for sweet foods.

So, no Gatorade, no coke, no juice, just water for 15 weeks and I’d bet $100 that you’ll lose at least 20lbs without doing any exercise at all.

In addition, stop eating crap. No potato chips, no McDonalds, no quick food at all. Eat at home and don’t eat anything microwavable.

Microwaves, as convenient as they are, are horrible for calorie consumption;. I got rid of my microwave and I can’t count the number of times I munched on some vegetables or ate a salad because I wasn’t really hungry enough to cook something higher calorie without a microwave. With a microwave, hot pocket, burrito, personal pizza – the thought of any of that stuff makes me want to gag now.

Vanilla yogurt, granola and fresh fruit will take care of your cravings, eat it when you’re dying for junk food and get it at Whole Foods if you can. Horizon (sp?) makes a really excellent yogurt and Whole Foods has a bunch of different granolas in bulk.

The more crap you cut out of your diet, the less you’ll want it and the better you’ll feel. Make sure you eat – starving yourself tells your body to store stout so it’s counterproductive.

Eggs are awesome food and simple to cook. You can add pretty much anything to an omelet and it’s pure fuel. The cage free eggs really taste better and they’re not that much more expensive.

Hope some of that helps – excellent luck!
